NN REVIEW: Mario Kart 7

I bought the 3DS months ago during that small window of time when Wal-Mart jumped the gun on dropping the price of the system. So I got mine for the reduced price AND was able to sign up as a 3DS Ambassador. At the time the only game worth playing on the 3DS in my eyes was Ocarina of Time but I knew the future looked good for the system and I took the risk. So I beat Ocarina and then simply waited. My 3DS collected dust but the release of Mario Kart 7 got ever closer and it quickly made its way onto my Christmas list. It was worth the wait.

I'm a sucker for Nintendo, I always have been. Give me a good Mario, Zelda, or Donkey Kong game and I'll be a happy camper even if they don't shake things up too much. To me these games have always been the best example that a game doesn't need to redefine a genre to be enjoyable, it just needs to be fun. Mario Kart 7 is not a big step either forwards or backwards for the Mario Kart series, but it does so many things well that it's impossible not to enjoy your time with it, even if it's brief.

It took me about 2 days to beat every tournament on 100cc while earning 3 stars for each track and although that may not seem like a lot of time, there definitely doesn't feel like there is a lack of content when playing through. All in all there are 8 tournaments with 4 tracks each so a total of 32 possible tracks to play which is pretty extensive. 4 of those tournaments are comprised of old tracks from all the other iterations of Mario Kart and trust me the devs made the best decisions when deciding which tracks to bring back! You'll see some of the old school favorites like Kalimari Desert, Koopa Beach, old school Rainbow Road and more. The new tracks are almost all incredibly fun as well. Adding some new features like hang gliding and driving underwater give the tracks the opportunity to be more versatile and memorable. Some tracks, including the new Rainbow Road which is my favorite iteration of the popular course to date, are simply one huge lap comprised of three sections rather than a smaller course with three laps. All in all the variety and creativity that can be found in the different courses give Mario Kart 7 the best track list in a Mario Kart game to date.

Another aspect from MK7 that I have absolutely loved is the opportunity to race online against people from across the world. Joining an online match is simple and the 3DS does an incredibly nice job of grouping up 5-8 people within a matter of minutes. Not once have I been in a group where less than 3 countries are represented and it's pretty fun to know you're racing against people from Japan, Australia, Europe, etc. The online mode is simple and you simply get VR points for finishing well in races so there's nothing too in depth. But for so long the best part about the Mario Kart games was racing against our friends and now we can do that almost anytime.

The character selection in MK7 may be one area where the game is lacking. Initially there are only 8 drivers to choose from with 4 more available for unlocks. This is still a decent amount but I've come to expect somewhat of a larger lineup from the more recent iterations of MK, Super Smash, Mario Tennis, etc. However, it seems that MK7 has improved the disparity that often existed between characters. Choosing DK or Bowser will no longer make you infinitely slower than the competition although there is still a difference; and driving as Koopa (my personal favorite) will not condemn you to being knocked off the course each time you bump into Peach. When I play online there is always a wide variety of characters selected and it's nice to see people being able to play as whoever they want and still have a chance to win.

All in all I think Mario Kart 7 has to be looked at as a massive success. Coupled with Super Mario 3D Land, this Christmas season has seen a resurgence for the 3DS and has made the future look bright for the once "doomed" handheld. A wide selection of maps, brilliant use of 3D, some new items, online play, hang gliding and underwater sequences have all come together to make a Mario Kart that is different enough to feel fresh but not different enough to feel like a whole new series. Although there are some things that people won't enjoy about this iteration, for the most part it's everything we love from Mario Kart and it represents just one more reason to get out there and buy a 3DS!

My Rating: 8.5/10

VIDEO GAMES: Is it Christmas yet?

Well I continue to get more and more excited for the release of Mario Kart 7! It's another 3DS title that I am forcing myself to wait for until Christmas rather than rushing out and buying it on release day. The reviews are starting to roll in and it sounds like this is the best Mario Kart to date! Some of the more notable reviews thus far are a 9 from IGN, 8.5 from Gameinformer, 4.5/5 from Joystiq and an 87 on Metacritic. I was already looking forward to another great game to play on the 3DS but it sounds like this Mario Kart will offer more to love than ever. With some new implementations like an in depth Kart customization system, gliders and underwater capabilities on your Kart and the reintroduction of coins to be collected on the courses it appears that although the game will play the same as past titles, there is plenty of material to set it apart. But what has got me most excited is the apparent awesomeness of the online play. This is something that has been missing from previous Mario Karts. The chance to link up and play with people from anywhere in the world for some good old fashion Mario Kart. Because that's what made the older versions the best, playing with friends. There are also some cool features with Street Pass which allow you to see another person's profile and even race against their best times once you pass them on the streets. All in all it sounds like this will be just one more reason for people to go out and buy a 3DS and I hope it helps to continue Nintendo's righting of the ship over the past couple of months.

Mario Kart 7 hits shelves on December 4th!

VIDEO GAMES: Start your engines!

Two new characters will be joining the panel of racers in Mario Kart 7! According to G4TV the new faces will be none other than Wiggler and Honey Queen. Personally I can't wait to see how Wiggler actually gets into one of those little Karts. Honey Queen is from the Mario Galaxy games so she's not as classic a character as Wiggler but should still be cool. These two join Metal Mario and Lakitu as confirmed new racers in Mario Kart 7 but it also sounds like there are more racers to be announced as the game gets closer. I always love when they add new faces to games like Mario Kart and Mario Tennis. I still can't wait for this game to come out as I'm sure the 3DS will make it all that much more immersive.

VIDEO GAMES: Ready your wallets and clear your schedule!

Well Battlefield 3 has hit stores nationwide and for the most part it's blowing peoples' minds. Although there has been some server problems and minor glitches with the game (this is why you don't rush release dates) the feedback from those who have been playing BF3 has been nothing but positive. So there you have it! There's nothing else to look forward to this year...oh wait. Actually there's so much to look forward to before this year finishes that it literally keeps me up at night. Like seriously, there are so many games coming out within the next couple months that are going to be incredible.

Here's my list of what I think are the most notable games hitting shelves before the end of 2011!

November 1st:
Title: Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
Platform: PS3
For any of you PS3 owners out there this is going to be an absolute must buy. The Uncharted series has been what I believe to be the posterboy series for PS3 exclusives and I'd be lying if I said I was never close to running to Gamestop to buy a PS3 almost only to play Uncharted. The absolutely rave reviews for all three games have always intrigued me and it seems that almost everyone who has played the games is in love with Nathan Drake. This one is less than a week away so get ready PS3 owners!

November 1st:
Title: Sonic Generations
Platforms: 360, PS3, 3DS (December 8)
Remember when Sonic was an awesome game? Well I barely do because I was like 6 years old when I played it on the Sega Genesis. Apparently Sonic Generations brings the beloved hedgehog back to his glory days with an impeccable combination of side scrolling and 3D gameplay. I personally can't wait to play Generations on my 3DS but I'm not sure if I'll be purchasing it as soon as it hits shelves; this may be a Christmas title for me.

November 8th:
Title: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Platforms: 360, PS3, PC, Wii
Do I really need to say anything? I'll see all you guys at Gamestop on the 8th!

November 11th:
Title: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Platforms: 360, PS3, PC
I am about 99% positive that this will be my game of the year. With the promise for breathtaking landscapes, and a completely immersive world I literally cannot wait for Skyrim to come out. I have spent recent nights struggling to fall asleep as I battle with myself over what kind of character I will play in Skyrim. Will I be a lightning chucking mage, a warrior with proficiencies (not sure if that's a word) in sword and shield or two handed weapons or something else entirely? Once Skyrim hits shelves it is likely that I won't play anything else for quite a long time.

November 13th:
Title: Super Mario 3D Land
Platforms: Nintendo 3DS
The Nintendo 3DS is finally starting to heat up. With Sonic Generations and Super Mario 3D Land both hitting within the next couple weeks and Mario Kart 7 just around the corner I am finally getting excited to play the thing consistently. Mario 3D Land promises to be a gorgeous Mario game that combines everything we love about past Mario games into one awesome experience. I mean come on, you get to use the Tanooki suit while experiencing game play like Mario Galaxy! I for one am pumped!

November 15th:
Title: Assassins Creed: Revelations
Platforms: 360, PS3, PC (on 12/29)
Now I've never gotten into the AC games so I'm not even sure which game in the series this is but I know a ton of people are excited for it. Unfortunately that's about all the information I know. So yea, if you're into being a hooded badass who roams the streets killing bad people in awesome ways then you might want to check this one out!

November 15th:
Title: Halo Combat Evolved: Anniversary
Platforms: 360
It was a decade ago when the first Halo graced Xbox systems everywhere and introduced us to what is no doubt the most popular and successful Xbox exclusive title out there. It started a series that has produced almost no weak games and has consumed hours upon hours of our lives experiencing awesome multiplayer. This anniversary edition brings back everything we loved about the first game but brings the graphics up to date offering an experience much like the one the developers imagined but couldn't give us with their current technology. I'm expecting this game to sell very well.

November 18th:
Title: Minecraft
Platforms: PC (for now)
What?? I thought Minecraft was already out? Haven't people been playing it addictively for months creating incredible worlds and such? Well yes, but believe it or not Minecraft is still in beta! Personally I have put quite a few hours into my little world and I'm excited for the game to finally actually be released in all its glory so hopefully more people can experience its awesomeness.

December 4th:
Title: Mario Kart 7
Platforms: Nintendo 3DS
How could you not love Mario Kart? I mean honestly every Mario Kart game in the series has been completely awesome. Whether or not they tread new ground is irrelevant to me since the game is always so damn fun anyways. But it does look like 7 does tread some new ground with underwater portions of tracks as well as extremely customizable karts! This is one I'll definitely be getting on release date as I'm sure it's going to be completely absorbing on the 3DS!

December 20th:
Title: Star Wars: The Old Republic
Platforms: PC
Could this mark the end of World of Warcraft? A Massively Multiplayer Online experience set in the world of Star Wars? Where you can be a Sith, Jedi, bounty hunter, pilot, etc. and follow your own unique story line in a galaxy far, far away! This is perhaps the most highly anticipated game of the year and to be honest I think the expectations are getting a little high. The concept of the game is brilliant and intriguing but I can't help but feel that EA may be rushing its release like they just did with BF3 which translates into a lot of problems in the first month which is when most people will decide whether or not they'll play the game. I'll be checking it out for sure but I'm not sure where I'll end up with ToR.

GAMESCOM: Does Mario Kart 7 look amazing???

Heck freakin yes it does! Here's a 7 minute YouTube video of Mario Kart being played at Gamescom and I cannot wait for it to come out! This is a perfect example of one of the games that will eventually make the 3DS an awesome portable system packed with tons of great titles both new and old from Nintendo. We also see some new touches like being able to select from different chassis, wheels, etc. for your kart before each race! The tracks played in the demo also looks awesome, I mean come on, your kart gets a hang glider when you soar through the air! The only bad part about Mario Kart 7 is that we have to wait until December 4th to get it!
