MOVIES: No foolin' around.

Well today is April Fool's Day but The Hunger Games continues to seriously dominate the box office competition. Even with Wrath of the Titans opening this weekend, boasting better special effects and story than the original, Games wasn't phased. Katniss stayed in the number one spot with a strong $61.1 million to bring her two week total to $251 million! Wrath of the Titans took second with $34.2 million followed by Mirror Mirror which grabbed $19 million. 21 Jump Street took the fourth spot with $15 million and The Lorax stayed in the top 5 taking in just over $9 million over the weekend. I saw The Hunger Games for the second time this weekend and loved it even more the second time through. 21 Jump Street is also hilarious so I highly recommend both of them. MOVIES: The sky is blue...

And The Hunger Games is freaking successful! How successful? Well, let's just say there have only been two movies in the history of cinema that have done better on their opening weekend. The Hunger Games pulled in an absolutely ridiculously insane $155 million in its opening weekend making it the third highest opening for a film ever and the highest for a non-sequel. There was no doubt that the movie would be a hit, but when you combine the fact that not only does this appeal to a much wider audience than films like Twilight, with the crazy notion that The Hunger Games is actually a good movie, you get something pretty special. Personally I loved the movie and think that other book adaptations can learn a lot from it. Anyways, second place this weekend went to 21 Jump Street which just barely missed the top spot taking in $21.3 million. The Lorax took third with $13.1 million followed by John Carter which grabbed just over $5 million. Act of Valor remained in the top 5 taking in just over $2 million over the weekend. So, it's kind of a stupid question based on the numbers but, did you see The Hunger Games this weekend? What did you think?

 

MOVIES: Whoopsies

Disney took a massive risk with John Carter. Although a lesser known tale, Carter is a sci-fi adventure that was the inspiration for some of our favorite fantasy tales like Star Wars. Recently Brad Bird made his first foray into live-action with Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and the result was one of the best movies of 2011. This time Brad Bird, another Pixar director (Wall-E and Finding Nemo) tried his hand at the live-action scene and the result was not quite as pleasant. Plagued by negative reviews out of the gate, John Carter failed to impress on a weekend where it should have dominated the box office, with no real competitors releasing this weekend.

The Lorax stayed on top for the second weekend in a row taking in an incredibly solid $39.1 million to bring its box office total to over $120 million already! John Carter massively underproduced taking the second spot with only $30.6 million on its opening weekend. Considering the movie took over $250 million to make, Disney might be in a bit of trouble with this one. Third place went to Project X which grabbed just over $11.5 million and the "one-shot" horror film Silent House took the fourth slot with $7.01 million. Act of Valor rounded out the top 5 with $7 million. So what do you think? Did you see John Carter? MOVIES: Leading Lorax

The box office numbers are in for this weekend and we have a new leader for a debut weekend in 2012! The Lorax pulled in an amazing $70.7 million in its opening weekend to take the number one spot at the box office by a landslide. Unfortunately reviews aren't quite as hot as I had hoped for Lorax as it sounds like it abandons it's message in favor of pop culture references; I still might see it though. Second place saw Project X taking in $20.7 million followed by Act of Valor which took in $13.7 million. Safe House continues to impress coming in fourth place with $7.2 million bringing its box office total to $108.1 million! Good Deeds rounded out the top 5 with $7 million. Did you see anything this weekend? I'm sure John Carter will run away with the top spot next weekend.

MOVIES: Soldiers Dominate

Well the box office results are in for the weekend and Act of Valor took the number one spot by a pretty healthy margin. Overall this weekend wasn't a huge one in the box office with AoV taking the top prize with $24.7 million. I'm a little disappointed in the weak reviews of Valor as I had been looking forward to checking it out. Good Deeds came in second with $16 million (insert comment about amazement that Tyler Perry is still making money). Next up was Journey 2 which continued to do well taking in roughly $13.5 million followed by Safe House which grabbed just over $11.3 million. The Vow rounded out the top 5 this weekend taking in $10 million. Did you see anything this weekend? Looking forward to anything coming up? I'm actually hoping both The Lorax and Project X get strong reviews as both hit next weekend.

MOVIES: No one is Safe.

This weekend shaped up to be a nice competition at the box office. With The Vow coming off of a strong opening weekend, it wasn't clear whether it would stay on top or fall to either Safe House of Ghost Rider. In the end, Safe House just squeaked into the number one spot with $23.9 million in its opening weekend. The Vow took a close second with $23.6 million followed by Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance which grabbed $22 million. Fourth place saw Journey 2: The Mysterious Island with just over $20 million and This Means War rounded out the top five with just over $17.5 million. Personally I'm not too interested in any of the top 5 from this weekend, but Chronicle was absolutely incredible. Did you see anything this weekend? Looking forward to anything next weekend?

MOVIES: The Vow Wows

Well I certainly didn't see this coming. To be honest, even though I think it's a terrible movie, I thought The Phantom Menace's return to theaters would earn it the top spot at the box office but it wasn't even close! Hopefully this means fanboys with more self control than myself actually refrained from throwing more money at Lucas this weekend. Unfortunately, the movie that did take the top spot was The Vow with $41.7 freakin' million in its opening weekend! Good Lord I guess people are in the Valentine's Day mood. Second place was Safe House with an incredible strong $39 million. Journey 2 took the third spot with $27.5 million followed by Star Wars which took in $23 million. Chronicle rounded out the top 5 grabbing $12.3 million this weekend. I saw TPM against my better judgement but I'm hoping to get a chance to see Chronicle sometime this week. Did you see anything this weekend?

MOVIES: There were also movies this weekend.

Well the Superbowl just ended and the highlight of the evening for me was definitely the trailer for The Avengers. It will definitely get overshadowed this weekend but thankfully Chronicle did extremely well at the box office. The handheld/found footage superhero movie grabbed $22 million this weekend at the box office making it the winner. The Woman in Black just missed the number one spot taking in $21 million. Third place went to The Grey which took in $9.5 million followed by Big Miracle which grabbed $8.5 million. Underworld Awakening rounded out the top 5 with $5.6 million. I really want to see Chronicle now, how bout you guys?

MOVIES: Wolves be Warned

Back from Vegas, extremely tired, only gunna post the box office results from this weekend. The Grey came out strong pulling in $20 million in its opening weekend to take the top spot at the box office. It's received almost all good reviews and it sounds like it's one of the best "man vs. wild" films to date. Underworld: Awakening took in $12.5 million in the second place spot followed by One for the Money which stupid people paid $11.7 million to see. Fourth place went to Red Tails which grabbed $10.4 million and Man on a Ledge came out weak with only $8.2 million putting it at fifth place. Did you see anything this weekend? The only one I'm any interested in right now is The Grey but school starts for me tomorrow so I doubt I'll get around to it. Ok, time for some much needed sleep!

MOVIES: An uninteresting box office weekend.

Well there's not much I'm interested in seeing right now in theaters. Beauty and the Beast 3D was incredible but after Red Tails received such poor reviews I'm not sure if I'll fork over the $15 to see it anytime soon. This weekend at the box office the now 9 year old series Underworld came out on top with its newest entry Underworld: Awakening taking $25.4 million. I haven't seen any of the Underworld films but they seem like they don't take themselves too seriously and they've developed a pretty loyal following from what I've heard. Second place saw Red Tails taking in $19.1 million which I assume is going to be much, much lower than they had hoped for. Contraband came in third with $12.2 million followed by Extremely Loud which took $10.5 million. The top 5 was rounded out by Haywire which grabbed $9 million this weekend. MOVIES: Why hello there!

Whew! That was a long weekend I just spent up in the great white north (Canada). Sorry I wasn't able to post anything over the weekend or today, I just got back to my wonderful desk. Due to the fact that I'm insanely tired, it will probably take me a couple hours to find the best news from the weekend and all I really want to do is play more Star Wars: The Old Republic, I'm just going to post the box office results from this weekend today. I'll be back to the normal schedule tomorrow though :)

Ok so apparently I'm the only one who's kind of tired of Mark Wahlberg playing the exact same role in every movie because Contraband did quite well this weekend taking the number one box office spot with a take of $24.1 million surprisingly higher than Beauty and the Beast's return to theaters which grabbed $18.5 million and the second place spot. Mission Impossible stayed in the top 3 with $11.5 million followed by Joyful Noise which tricked people into giving over $11.35 million this weekend. Sherlock Holmes 2 once again showed its legs and stayed in the top 5 grabbing $8.4 million to bring its total to an extremely healthy $170 million! I obviously didn't have a chance to catch anything this weekend but I'll be seeing Beauty and the Beast tomorrow night which I am terribly excited for! Did you guys see anything this weekend??

MOVIES: What the hell?

So the numbers are in for this weekend's box office and once again I'm saddened by how far society seems to have fallen. The Devil Inside not only took the top spot, it obliterated all the competition. The $1 million horror flick pulled in an astounding $34.5 million which put it almost $15 million ahead of second place which was Mission Impossible taking in $20.5 million. Third place went to Sherlock Holmes with just over $14 million and fourth place saw Girl With the Dragon Tattoo taking in $11.4 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks grabbed the number five spot with $9.5 million. I hope none of you saw The Devil Inside this weekend for your own sakes. The movie currently is sitting at a 7% on Rottentomatoes and is apparently becoming known for its horrendous ending...although I'm not sure what everyone really expected. It's usually a quiet time of the year now as we wait for the Spring movies to hit. What are you all interested in?

MOVIES: Ghost Protocol Stays Strong

Well the results are in for the New Years weekend box office and it was a pretty good week. Mission Impossible stayed on top with another good weekend pulling in $31.2 million. This brings its total take so far to an incredibly solid $134 million. Once again Sherlock Holmes took second place with $22 million followed by Chipwrecked which took in just over $18 million. Fourth place saw War Horse with just under $17 million and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo rounded out the top 5 with $16.3 million. It turned out to be a decent box office year in 2011 but 2012 is shaping up to be much stronger. We already have several sure fire box office smashes with The Hobbit, The Dark Knight Rises, Prometheus, The Amazing Spider Man and The Avengers! What are you most looking forward to in 2012?

MOVIES: Dah duh, duh duh da duh

That right there is the theme song for Mission Impossible in case you couldn't tell. Over the Christmas weekend it finally released on a wide scale and it resulted in first place in the box office! I saw it in IMAX and I can tell you it is worth the $20 to see it on the big screen and not just for the Batman prologue. It took the top spot with a 4-day total of $46.2 million. Second place went to Sherlock Holmes which grabbed $31.8 million to bring its total up to an impressive $90 million after only two weeks. Third place saw Alvin and the Chipmunks with $13 million followed by The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo which took in $19.4 million as well as some Oscar buzz. Adventures of Tin Tin rounded out the top 5 with $16.1 million. All in all it was a strong weekend at the box office with plenty of great films to choose from. Did you see any? MOVIES: This one's no mystery.

Well Sherlock Holmes pretty much dominated at the box office this weekend. I guess tons of people wanted to see the trailer for The Dark Knight Rises beforehand huh? Although the numbers were better than the previous couple of weekends, it still looks like people aren't forking over the $15 it takes to see a movie this time of year. Sherlock took first place with $40 million followed by Chipwrecked which only pulled $23.5 million. Mission Impossible came in third (I couldn't see it last night as the show sold out) with $13 million and New Year's Eve took fourth place with $7.4 million. The Sitter rounded out the top five with only $4.4 million. I still want to see Mission Impossible and also Tintin which comes out on Wednesday (for The Hobbit trailer). What will you see over this Christmas season?

MOVIES: Yes!.....No!

Well I can finally report a box office weekend in which Twilight is not number 1!!! The saddest news of all is that New Years Eve is the winner this weekend...making us all losers. I someday wish to live in a world where a movie with a 27% on Rotten Tomatoes doesn't take the box office title 3 weekends in a row only to be usurped on week 4 by a movie with a 7%. Gah, I don't want to keep talking or it will get nasty. The good news is that no movies did well this weekend as New Years took the top prize with only $13.7 million...extremely weak. Second place went to The Sitter which took in $10 million followed by Breaking Dawn which pulled $7.9 million. Fourth place saw The Muppets with just over $7 million and Arthur Christmas rounded out the top 5 with $6.6 million. Next week should be absolutely massive with the triple release of Mission Impossible, Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks. Want to hear my prediction? Sherlock and Mission Impossible split audiences while the Chipmunks get all the kids and families to take the first place spot.

MOVIES: Folks this needs to stop!

I can't keep writing articles about Breaking Dawn being number one at the box office! Gosh dangit! It got another $16.9 million this weekend and nothing else even came close! The Muppets came in second for the second weekend in a row with $11.2 million. Third place went to Hugo which took in $7.6 million followed by Arthur Christmas which grabbed $7.3 million. Happy feet rounded out the top 5 with $6 million over the weekend. It's a bummer that there's not really any big releases for at least two weeks because it looks like Breaking Dawn's run might not quite be over. Once movies like Mission Impossible hit theaters they'll certainly take over though. This is just depressing though, I figured all the girls would have seen it by now...guess not. Oh well, you know my opinion, go see The Muppets!

MOVIES: I blame society.

Well we knew it was coming but it still hurts. Twilight stayed on top of the box office this weekend pulling in $62.3 million over the 5 day Thanksgiving break. This brings its total to an extremely disheartening $221.3 million....damn. The Muppets took up second place with a nice five day total of $42 million. I'm glad The Muppets still did well even though I would have lost my mind if they somehow managed to defeat Twilight. Third place went to Happy Feet Two which took in $18.3 million followed by Arthur Christmas which pulled $16.9 million over the 5 days. Rounding out the top 5 was Hugo, which has gotten incredible reviews, and managed to take in $15.3 million. There's a lot of good movies in theaters right now with The Muppets, Arthur Christmas and Hugo all scoring over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes! It's a testament to how dumb we are that Twilight still dominates the competition and sits with a horrendous 27% on the Tomato Meter. So what did you all see this weekend?

MOVIES: Life sucks.

This is the most painful article I've ever had to write but alas, I post the box office results every weekend. Twilight just snuck in to first place with the fifth best opening weekend in cinematic history. $139.5 million worth of girls paid to see less than mediocre acting and less than mediocre special effects which are apparently offset by abs and a story about a girl who has some serious relationship issues. It was nearly usurped by Happy Feet Two which I realized existed while looking up the box office results for this weekend. Happy Feet grabbed $22 million putting it just $117.5 million behind Twilight. Third place went to Immortals which grabbed roughly $12.3 million and fourth place saw the abysmal Jack and Jill which stole $12 million from idiots across the nation. Puss in Boots hung on to stay in the top 5 for probably the last weekend with almost $11 million. But there remains good news for the future!!!

Play the music and light the lights because on Wednesday The Muppets hits theaters! Although still with limited reviews it currently sits with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and was given 4.5/5 stars from IGN! That is definitely what I'll be seeing over the Thanksgiving break. What about everyone else?

MOVIES: Dear Lord

Well the top two spots in the box office this weekend are a sign of how far society has fallen. Immortals took the first place spot with a surprisingly strong $32 million. I'm deeply saddened to say that Jack & Jill came in second place with a terrifying $26 million. Seriously? $26 million worth of people paid money to watch Adam Sandler play a girl in a movie that is sitting AT A 3% ON ROTTEN TOMATOES! Gosh dangit it's because people keep paying to see this crap that Sandler keeps making lackluster films. If we keep paying him the same regardless of how hard he tries he has no reason to find his old comedic spark again. Anyways, Puss in Boots fell to third place this weekend taking home a still incredible $25.5 million to bring its total gross to a very solid $109 million! Tower Heist stole the fourth place spot with $13.2 million and J. Edgar rounded out the top 5 with $11.5 million in its opening weekend. Did you all see anything this weekend?
